Air Force Visiting Scientist Program

The Air Force Visiting Scientist Program provides outstanding Air Force scientists and engineers the opportunity to conduct full-time, hands-on research-related work in leading U.S. university and industry laboratories for a period of up to 179 days on a temporary duty status funded by Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR). Upon completion of the assignment the researcher returns to his or her Air Force laboratory. The university or industrial laboratory provides a letter of invitation, and makes facilities, equipment, and resources available. The host laboratory must be located in the United States. Typically the researcher is an Air Force scientist or engineer, at least at the GS-13 level or its military equivalent. The applicant must write a project proposal, preferably not to exceed 10 pages, but of sufficient depth and scope, so that it can be evaluated by the scientists at the participating organizations. Hands-on laboratory research-related work is an essential program element. The traveler is required to submit a written report detailing his or her experiences and results of the project at the completion of the TDY. In addition, the traveler may be required to give a seminar presentation at the Air Force laboratory or at AFOSR and to provide feedback for purposes of program assessment.


Farewell OSP’s Diane Brown

OSP is saddened by the passing of Diane Brown last weekend. Known to many of the faculty as an outgoing contract negotiator, she helped organize many of the research contracts in play today and over the last decade. Her obit can be found here.

Casey Burton, a third-year Ph.D. student in chemistry at Missouri S&T, is one of six finalists for theBioAnalysis Zone Young Investigator Award, and he needs your help to win this award. Please vote for Burton in the competition. Burton works with Dr. Yinfa Ma, Curators’ Distinguished Teaching Professor of chemistry, on research related to the early detection of cancer. The work of Burton and Ma could save many lives in the future.

Spotlight: Center for Single Nanoparticle, Single Cell, and Single Molecule Monitoring (CS3M)

A relatively new lab at S&T is working on:

– Early cancer detection

– Nanomedicine design and drug delivery

– Nanoparticle monitoring

– And broad applications to the life sciences, analytical chemistry, environmental monitoring, and others.

S&T runs a very credible photography service with Sam O’Keefe available to take pictures of what is important in the life of Missouri S&T. You can task Sam here.

Research use of this service is very weak. The most recent picture posted in the S&T Photostream of a research activity is a year old with the Honeywell Agreement signing. Researchers should not be shy about getting pictures taken and posted.


Spotlight: PECASE fellow

One of the most prestigious awards is PECASE (President’s Award for Early Career Excellence) and we have one recent fellow on campus. Richard Dawes in Chemistry from the 2014 competition. We are very proud of his achievement and example. If you want to know about this NSF program he would be a good source.

Spotlight: Drones – big news

Missouri S&T is ready to fly. As of this week we have the permissions, the equipment, the people, the qualifications and the training to provide ‘turn-key’ style drone support to your research and academic needs. What is further we can offer those services to your commercial and academic partners. We’ll do some demonstrations on campus so you can meet the team and see the platforms fly.


Also the FAA released its new rule today (June 21) on small UAV. You can see a summary of the 600+ page rule here.
