NIH submission tip from Meg Bouvier

TIP #4

Is your target clinical population represented on your planning committee?

If so, that’s a good thing—your target demographic will have a greater voice in the design of the project.

Up until a few years ago, most of you would have had representation of your target clinical population on your team. So for example, if you were conducting a study on Latinos, you might have had a project manager who was Latino in order to ensure community buy-in. That won’t cut it anymore. You now need representation on the planning committee. That’s a good thing—your target demographic will have a greater voice in the design of the project. So borrow the lessons from Community-Based Participatory Research and make sure your research subjects are represented on your planning committee—be they diabetics, African Americans, breast cancer survivors, sedentary individuals, parents of kids with ASD, thoracotomy patients, or any other research population.
