Title:  Electrical Resistivity Tomography and Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves Techniques for Karst Terrain Investigations

Abstract:  Geophysical techniques in recent times have gained more popularity over conventional methods for subsurface investigations. One characteristic environment which presents complex geologic and morphologic subsurface conditions making it unsuitable for investigation by conventional methods is the karst terrain. Geophysical methods however, have been applied successfully in imaging subsurface lithologic conditions. The electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) and multichannel analysis of surface waves (MASW) tools were respectively used to acquire resistivity and acoustic data at a proposed landfill site in Springfield, Missouri to characterize the subsurface. This presentation seeks to review relevant literature on karst, as well as some geophysical techniques for karst investigations. Data acquisition, processing and interpretation of the geophysical data acquired by the ERT and MASW techniques will be presented to demonstrate the utility of the tools.
