Comments from the Vice Provost of Research

“Based on information I gathered when I recently visited NSF, I understand that the NRT solicitation is being revised and a new version including two additional themes on Understanding the Brain (UtB) and Innovations at the Nexus of Food, Energy, and Water Systems (INFEWS) will be announced in the near future.  I will forward the new solicitation as soon as it is announced and make appropriate changes, but would like to go ahead and set the internal review dates based on the current solicitation. ‘

National Science Foundation Research Traineeship (NRT) Program (this program is the successor to the Integrated Graduate Research Traineeship (IGERT) program and the scope has been extended and broadenedcompared to the program launched in 2014) – we may submit up to three (3) proposals.  We may submit two Traineeship Track proposals and one Innovations in Graduate Education Track proposal. If we submit only one Traineeship Track proposal, it can be on either Data-Enabled Science and Engineering (DESE) or another theme. If we submit two Traineeship Track proposals, at least one must be a DESE proposal. In either case (DESE or non-DESE), the traineeship theme of a Traineeship Track proposal must be interdisciplinary.

The internal review deadlines we will be following to select the three proposals that will go forward are:

Intent to submit a proposal (PI and co-PI names, Title of Proposal and Proposal Track Name): Monday, November 30, 2015

  • Submission of 2-page white paper: Monday, December 7, 2015
  • Oral presentation of proposals: Week of December 14, 2015

NSF’s deadlines are:

  • Letter of Intent (optional): Tuesday, December 22, 2015

There will not be an internal review if you are collaborating with another university, which will be serving as the lead.  However, I would appreciate you letting me know the name of the collaborative university and title of your proposal.

NSF’s deadline for receiving the full proposal is Tuesday, February 16, 2016.
