Spotlight: Broader Impacts Network

60 faculty gathered Thursday afternoon to talk with Dr. Susan Renoe and Dr. Sarah Vassmer about the expectations  (primarily from the National Science Foundation) on Broader Impacts (BI). Luckily for us Broader Impacts Network (BIN) established in Missouri is a ‘national model of doing it right’. Renoe explained  the big, and still developing, picture and what an individual researcher can do be competitive with this new requirement that is spreading to other federal funding agencies.

Dr. Susan Renoe of BIN explains a few consideration. A video of her talk will be published on eResearch within the week

Salient points:

  • for the Missouri S&T PI who are planning and writing a proposal BIN can do three things
    • one-on-one consulting on the broader impacts elements of the proposal (if 3 months out they can help design a whole integrated plan – if one month out they can review and coach on what the PI has already planned)
    • build collaborations and find partners for the broader impacts plan
    • provide training for a group (proposal team, department …)
  • for those in-a-real-hurry because this was left for last they suggest hooking up to existing campus programs. To that end they, and OSP, will develop a catalog of resources to make this approach easier. And they suggest you list in your BI plan that you are connected to the BIN; that is a selling point.
  • for those taking a longer term approach BIN:
    • invites you to an intensive training event October 22/23 at the Bond Life Sciences Building (MU campus) designed for all the faculty at S&T, UMSL, UMKC and MU. OSP will notify all when registration is available and try to organize a car pool for travel.
    • visit you at S&T to help devise a plan and promote your societal impact
    • assist campus with building a BI identity
