Benefits for Faculty and Graduate Students

  1. Increases the impact of research

    Many journals are subscription-based, which can potentially make your work inaccessible to many researchers who lack access to subscription-based services. Scholars’ Mine is regularly crawled and indexed by Google, Google Scholar, Bing and other popular search engines, which makes your scholarship easy to find and accessible to readers worldwide. Scholars’ Mine provides complete bibliographic information for the original publication, so readers will always be able to cite the version of record, helping your citation rates.

    The discipline-specific nature of journals and databases can be a barrier for scholars engaging in interdisciplinary research. FY 2015 Continuation of Solicitation for the Office of Science Financial Assistance Program: Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR) – Computer Science

The mission of the Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR) program is to advance applied mathematics and computer science; deliver, in partnership with disciplinary science, the most advanced computationalscientific applications; advance computing and networking capabilities; and develop, in partnership with the research community, including U.S. industry, future generations of computing hardware and tools for science.

The priority areas for ASCR include the following:
1. Develop mathematical models, methods and algorithms to accurately describe and predict the behavior of complex systems involving processes that span vastly different time and/or length scales.
2. Advance key areas of computer science that enable the design and development of extreme scale computing systems and their effective use in the path to scientific discoveries; and transform extreme scale data from experiments and simulations into scientific insight.
3. Advance key areas of computational science and discovery that support the missions of the Office of Science through mutually beneficial partnerships.
4. Develop and deliver forefront computational, networking and collaboration tools and facilities that enable scientists worldwide to work together to extend the frontiers of science.

The Computer Science subprogram supports basic research to advanceextreme scale scientific computing and data management and analysis. It also supports research in computer science that enables scientific applications and data-driven computational science through advances in petascale and exascale computing systems.

In the context of ASCR-supported high performance computing environments, research topics of
interest are:
– Data analysis and visualization: visual analytic techniques for comparative analysis of
data sets; visual analytic approaches to understanding the state and behavior of a
supercomputing system at scale; visual analysis of uncertainty and the sources thereof.
– Knowledge representation and machine learning for analysis of extreme scale scientific
data from simulations and experiments.
– Storage system software and/or scientific databases for extreme scale data that support
scientists’ models of their data and the use thereof.
– Automated methods for optimizing mappings and transformations of algorithms,
libraries, and applications expressed in a high level abstraction or language into platform
independent implementations.

New functional or declarative programming paradigms to deal with asynchronous
communications, fine-grained nested parallelism, irregular data and computations, memory
locality, placement, synchronization, scheduling, power, and resilience challenges of exascale

Manufacturing Machines and Equipment (MME)

The MME program supports fundamental research leading to improvedmanufacturing machines and equipment, and their application in manufacturingprocesses. Key goals of the program are to advance the transition of manufacturing from skill-based to knowledge-based activities, and to advance technologies that will enable the manufacturing sector to reduce its environmental impacts. A focus is on the advancement of manufacturingmachines and related systems engineering that will enable energymanufacturing, namely the manufacture of facilities and equipment that will enable the conversion of renewable resources into energy products such as electricity and liquid fuels, on a large scale. The program also supports research on additive manufacturing, laser processing and bonding/joining processes encompassing feature scales from microns to meters. Proposals with focus on materials for these processes are also welcome in MME. Note: nanometer scale additive manufacturing is supported under the Nanomanufacturing program.


The Bureau of Reclamation’s (Reclamation’s) Title XVI Water Reclamation and Reuse program (Title XVI) is an important part of WaterSMART. For purposes of the Title XVI Program, a water reuse project is a project that reclaims and reuses municipal, industrial, domestic, or agricultural wastewater and naturally impaired groundwater and/or surface waters. Reclaimed water can be used for a variety of purposes such as environmental restoration, fish and wildlife, groundwater recharge, municipal, domestic, industrial, agricultural, power generation, or recreation. Water reuse is an essential tool in stretching the limited water supplies in the Western United States. Title XVI projects develop and supplement urban and irrigation water supplies through water reuse, thereby improving efficiency, providing flexibility during water shortages, and diversifying the water supply. Title XVI projects provide growing communities with new sources of clean water while promoting water and energy efficiency and environmental stewardship and are an important part of the Department’s implementation of the President’s June 2013 Climate Action Plan and the November 1, 2013, Executive Order, Preparing the United States for the Impacts of Climate Change. Through water reuse, Title XVI projects increase water management flexibility, making our water supply more resilient and thereby helping to prepare for the impacts of climate change.

Department of Energy Issues FY 2016 Funding Opportunity Announcements to Support Nuclear Energy Research and Infrastructure

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Nuclear Energy today announced two Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOAs) to support nuclear energy research at U.S. universities and colleges, national laboratories, and industry. U.S. universities and national laboratories will also have the opportunity to expand nuclear science and education capabilities in support of the next generation of nuclear scientists and engineers. The Department will provide funds for Program Supporting, Mission Supporting, Program Directed, and Nuclear Science User Facilities research, as well as upgrades to university research reactors and university and national laboratory general scientific infrastructure.
