Congratulations to Professor John McManus who was just notified of his being awarded as a Public Scholar by National Endowment for the Humanities. You can learn more about the program here.

John plans to add to his impressive list of publication. ” This grant will help support my research for a new two volume history of the US Army in the Pacific/Asia theater during WWII. DARPA is coming to St Louis

DARPA to Explore Possible Futures at “Wait, What?” Forum


DARPA opened general registration for what promises to be an extraordinary gathering: “Wait, What? A Future Technology Forum,” to be held September 9th through 11th in St. Louis.

“Wait, What?” will offer a mix of fast-paced presentations, interactive discussion sessions and in-depth demonstrations focused on some of the most consequential and dynamic scientific and technological fields today, to consider the capabilities those fields could enable and the myriad implications of those capabilities for society and national security. “Wait, What?” is for forward-thinking scientists, engineers and other innovators interested in sharing ideas with some of today’s most inventive individuals working on cold atoms, live brains, small satellites, complex systems, human and artificial intelligence, and the topology of big data, among other topics.

Many innovators today are pursuing extraordinary questions and opportunities not only in specialized disciplines but also in the rich intellectual and technical environments where fields are merging. As the federal R&D agency tasked with preventing and fomenting strategic technological surprise, DARPA has organized “Wait, What?” to explore anticipated advances across a spectrum of domains through the lens of national and global security—to reveal potentially attractive avenues of technological pursuit and to catalyze new conversations among participants.

“New research and technology will fundamentally change what’s possible in the years ahead,” said DARPA Director Arati Prabhakar. “At ’Wait, What?’ a wide range of creative scientists and engineers will share their technical insights and explore our possible futures.”

Public online registration for “Wait, What?” will open at noon Eastern Time on June 10. Space will be limited. More information about the event—including invited speakers, event agenda, and venue and travel information—is available at

On behalf of Dr. Dean Bartles, the Executive Director of the Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute (DMDII), we are pleased to announce the release of five new Project Calls for the three DMDII Technology Thrusts: Advanced Manufacturing Enterprise (AME), Intelligent Machines (IM), and Advanced Analysis (AA).

The title and goal of each Project Call is listed below:

Completing the Model-Based Definition (DMDII-15-11). This topic aims to develop digital models that describe digital product designs and the manufacturing information about these products.

Technologies Enabling Supply Chain Visibility (DMDII-15-12).  The goal of this topic is to demonstrate technologies that can provide real-time, dynamic visibility into the status of key information to facilitate efficient response to rapidly changing conditions.

Cyber Security for Intelligent Machines (DMDII-15-13).  The goal of this topic is to develop technologies that can identify, manage and mitigate the cyber security risks associated with digitally connected manufacturing equipment.

Hardware / Software Toolkit for Real-Time Machine and Process Diagnostics, Monitoring and Self-Correction (DMDII-15-14).  This topic aims to implement machine intelligence into manufacturing equipment in a way that is low cost and scalable.

Agile Manufacturing to Compensate for Production Variability (DMDII-15-15).  The goal of this topic is to demonstrate digital manufacturing technologies that mitigate variability among manufactured products, and to thereby reduce manufacturing costs and more rapidly bring new products to market.

Department of Energy Announces Webinar on August 10-12 to Discuss FY 2016 Funding Opportunity Announcements

The U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Nuclear Energy will be hosting the FY 2016 webinar to discuss its various Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOAs) August 10-12, 2015. DOE-NE anticipates discussing the FY 2016 CINR FOA, FY 2016 Consolidated Infrastructure FOA, NEUP/NEET R&D workscopes, and NSUF access to nuclear infrastructure. New and modified aspects of DOE-NE’s consolidated FOAs will also be discussed.

Develop High Performance, Economically Viable, and Environmentally Benign Technologies to Recover Rare Earth Elements (REEs) From Domestic Coal and Coal Byproducts

As part of its continuing investigation, DOE is seeking financial assistance applications for projects to quickly develop bench-scale and pilot-scale projects for recovering REEs from coal and coal byproducts as follows:Area of Interest 1 (AOI 1) – Bench-scale Technology to Economically Separate, Extract, and Concentrate Mixed REEs from Coal and Coal Byproducts including Aqueous Effluents.

Area of Interest 2 (AOI 2) – Pilot-scale Technology to Economically Separate, Extract, and Concentrate Mixed REEs from Coal and Coal Byproduct Solids.

The proposed technology should be designed and developed for eventual deployment within the United States to provide reliable and competitive domestic sources of REEs.

Design of REE recovery technology should carefully consider the originating mechanisms, concentration, form, and structure of REEs in the proposed coal-related feedstocks, using the most promising material.

Identifying mineralogical characteristics and distribution of attributes such as phase assemblages, grain size, intergrowth textures, etc. could be helpful in designing REE recovery processes.

Applications should identify the most promising coal-related feedstocks and any known concentration of total REEs to be used for design of the proposed technology. For coal, total REEs should be expressed on a whole coal basis. Total REEs for ash samples should be expressed based on both a whole coal basis and an ash basis. Total REEs for other coal-related materials should be expressed on a whole sample basis.

NGA welcomes all innovative ideas for path-breaking research that may advance the GEOINT mission. The NGA mission is to provide timely, relevant, and accurate geospatial intelligence (GEOINT) in support of nationalsecurity objectives. GEOINT is the exploitation and analysis of imagery and geospatial information to describe, assess, and visually depict physical features and geographically referenced activities on the Earth. GEOINT consists of imagery, imagery intelligence, and geospatial information. NGA offers a variety of critical GEOINT products in support of U.S. national security objectives and Federal disaster relief, including aeronautical, geodesy, hydrographic, imagery, geospatial and topographical information.The NGA Academic Research Program (NARP) is focused on innovative, far-reaching basic and applied research in science, technology, engineering and mathematics having the potential to advance the GEOINT mission. The objective of the NARP is to support innovative, high-payoff research that provides the basis for revolutionary progress in areas of science and technology affecting the needs and mission of NGA. This research also supports the National System for Geospatial Intelligence (NSG), which is the combination of technology, systems and organizations that gather, produce, distribute and consume geospatial data and information. This research is aimed at advancing GEOINT capabilities by improving analytical methods, enhancing and expanding systems capabilities, and leveraging resources for common NSG goals. The NARP also seeks to improve education in scientific, mathematics, and engineering skills necessary to advance GEOINT capabilities.

It is NGA’s intent to solicit fundamental research under this BAA. Fundamental research means basic and applied research in science and engineering, the results of which ordinarily are published and shared broadly within the scientific community, as distinguished from proprietary research and from Industrial development, design, production, and product utilization, the results of which ordinarily are restricted for proprietary or national security reason. (National Security Decision Directive (NSDD) 189, National Policy on the Transfer of Scientific, Technical, and Engineering Information)

EarthScope is an Earth science program to explore the 4-dimensional structure of the North American continent. The EarthScope Program provides a framework for broad, integrated studies across the Earth sciences,including research on fault properties and the earthquake process, strain transfer, magmatic and hydrous fluids in the crust and mantle, plate boundary processes, large-scale continental deformation, continental structure and evolution, and composition and structure of the deep Earth. In addition, EarthScope offers a centralized forum for Earth science education at all levels and an excellent opportunity to develop cyberinfrastructure to integrate, distribute, and analyze diverse data sets.The EarthScope Facility, comprised of the Plate Boundary Observatory (PBO), the San Andreas Fault Observatory at Depth (SAFOD), and USArray, greatly expanded the observational capabilities of the Earth sciences. In FY 2014, the Geodesy Advancing Geosciences and EarthScope (GAGE) facility was created through the integration of PBO and prior “core” geodetic facilities supported by EAR. At the same time, the Seismological Facilities for the Advancement of Geosciences and EarthScope (SAGE) was created through the integration of USArray and prior “core” seismic facilities supported by EAR. UNAVCO ( manages SAGE, and Texas A&M University manages SAFOD physical samples and data derived from them.

This Solicitation calls for single or collaborative proposals to conduct scientific research and/or education and outreach activities within North America that
1. Make use of capabilities provided through, and/or data and/or models derived from, GAGE, SAGE, and/or SAFOD and
2. Further the scientific and educational goals of EarthScope, as described in the 2010 EarthScope Science Plan and/or EarthScope Education and Outreach Implementation Plan.
