Transit IDEA Program

The Transportation Research Board (TRB) is accepting proposals for the Transit IDEA Program, which supports the development and testing of innovative concepts and methods for advancing transit practice.  The Transit IDEA program has two review cycles in 2015.  The deadline for submitting proposals to these review cycles are May 1st and November 2nd

 IDEA stands for Innovations Deserving Exploratory Analysis.  The Transit IDEA Program provides funding at an early stage of the development process for promising but unproven innovative concepts or methods.  IDEA proposals can be for up to $100,000 in IDEA funds. 

 Transit IDEA proposals are particularly encouraged for innovations that address any one of the following four high priority focus areas for this program: improving transit safety or security; improving transit capital or operating efficiencies; increasing transit ridership; or protecting the environment and promoting energy independence. 

 The Transit IDEA Program is funded by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), as part of the Transit Cooperative Research Program (TCRP), a cooperative effort of the FTA, TRB, and APTA.

Solid State and Materials Chemistry (SSMC)

This multidisciplinary program supports basic research in solid state and materials chemistry comprising the elucidation of the atomic and molecular basis for material development and properties in the solid state from the nanoscale to the bulk. General areas of interest include but are not limited to innovative approaches to design, synthesis, bulk crystal and/or film growth, and characterization of novel organic, inorganic, and hybrid materials, as well as liquid crystal materials and multi-component material systems exhibiting new phenomena and/or providing new scientific insights into structure/composition/property relationships in the solid state. Relevant topics include original material design principles, new approaches to assembly or crystalline material growth, characterization of new material phenomena or superior behavior, investigations of surface and interfacial effects on material system structures and properties, and unraveling the relationships between structure/composition (e.g. self- or program-assembled materials, crystalline material growth, and nanostructured material systems) and properties (e.g. charge, ionic, thermal or spin transport, exciton diffusion, chemical reactivity and selectivity, etc.). Development of new organic solid state materials, environmentally-safe and sustainable materials, and fundamental studies of novel material and material systems for efficient energy harvesting, conversion and storage are encouraged. 

Mid-Career Researcher Award

Nomination for the Mid-Career Researcher Award is open to scientists and engineers who have made exceptional advances in the middle part of their career and have become recognized leaders in the materials area.Consideration is not limited by class of materials or area of materials research. A recipient must be between the ages of 40 and 52 at the time of nomination. Exceptions may be made for an interruption in career progression due to family or military service.

A nominee need not be a member of the Materials Research Society. Current members of the MRS Mid-Career Researcher Award Subcommittee, MRS Board members and previous MRS Mid-Career Researcher Award recipients are not eligible. Awards will not be bestowed in absentia except in extraordinary circumstances.

National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship

As a means of increasing the number of United States citizens training in disciplines of science and engineering of military importance, the DOD awards three-year graduate fellowships each year. National Defense Scienceand Engineering Graduate Fellowship Program (NDSEG) fellowships are awarded for study and research leading to doctoral degrees in mathematical, physical, biological, ocean, and engineering sciences. NDSEG fellowships are awarded on the basis of ability. Awards will be given to applicants whose field of study fits under one of the supported disciplines:

5. Civil engineering
6. Cognitive, neural, and behavioral sciences
7. Computer and computational sciences
8. Electrical engineering

NDSEG fellows may choose as their fellowship institution appropriate United States institutions of higher education offering advanced degrees in science and engineering. Fellows do not incur any military or other service obligation.

GEM — new NSF term

The Geotechnical Engineering and Materials (GEM) Program combines and replaces the Geotechnical Engineering Program and the Geomechanics and Geomaterials Program. This new Program supports fundamental research in soil and rock mechanics and dynamics in support of physical civil infrastructure systems. Also supported is research on improvement of the engineering properties of geologic materials by mechanical, biological, thermal, chemical, and electrical processes. The Program supports civil engineering applications in the traditional areas of foundation engineering, earth structures, underground construction, tunneling, geoenvironmental engineering, and site characterization, as well as the emerging area of bio-geo engineering, with emphasis on sustainable geosystems. Research related to the geotechnical engineering aspects of geothermal energy and geothermal heat pump systems is also supported.

The GEM program encourages knowledge dissemination and technology transfer activities that can lead to broader societal benefit and implementation for provision of physical civil infrastructure. The program supports relevant research topics that address the emerging areas of geotechnical engineering and the Grand Challenges to “restore and improve urban infrastructure” and “provide access to clean water.”

form an international team to apply for research support on climate, environmental, and related societal change

The Belmont Forum’s Mountains as Sentinels of Change call aims at fostering research on climate, environmental, and related societal change in mountain regions, considering both new measurements, recovery of existingdata, and the development and use of integrated modelling strategies by adopting a strong trans- and inter-disciplinary approach. Attention to the hydrological, ecological, societal, and economic implications of the ongoing and expected environmental changes is an essential component in the proposed projects, as well as the design of adaptation measures in the face of climate and global change, regional development and sustainable development strategies for mountain regions. This call for proposals encourages the formation of new international networks. All calls require eligible participants from three or more of the participating countries (Brazil, China, France, Germany, Italy and the United States). Clear added value of the international consortium should be demonstrated and, if relevant, the added value for national investments. Researchers from countries not represented by any of the Partner Organizations can participate in the research project at their own expense. Where appropriate, some Partner Organizations could also support capacity building in some developing countries and for young researchers and technical staff in specific mountain areas. Each consortium must also show clear links to users and include collaboration between natural and social sciences, and other sciences where relevant. Additional national funding regulations may apply. The provisional funds committed from all countries amounts to 8 million Euros. Projects are for 18-36 months, beginning in 2016. The preliminary proposals deadline is June 1, 2015; the deadline for invited full proposals is October 30, 2015.
